Guild Patriotism

For many Americans, patriotism is the recognition that America is the greatest country on Earth, with military and economic strength second to none. The United States is the world's last remaining super power--for a reason, many will note--and that America alone has prevailed is proof-positive of its superiority.

So, what's so great about Switzerland? The Swiss might enjoy quality chocolate and be able to enjoy a good living, but let's face it: their neutrality makes them a joke. What about France? They wimped out during World War 2 and they wimped out on the war on terror. All the beauty of Paris couldn't mask their inadequacies. Or how about a country like Mexico, dirt-poor and corrupt? What do they have to be proud of?

And yet, Switzerland, France, and Mexico are full of patriots; people who love their countries even if they're not the strongest or richest. Mexicans in particular strangely retain their patriotism even after experiencing life in the United States, as their red, white, and green flags continue to replace red, white, and blue ones at a somewhat alarming rate.

Patriotism has nothing to do with "Who's Best?" but simply "Who?" Who are Americans? Or Mexicans? Or the French or Swiss? There are many factors: a particular people with particular traditions, a sense of rootedness, a shared history and shared ancestors, and an identity distinct from others. This sense of shared community is what defines a people, gives them a sense that they belong to something larger than themselves, and induces patriotic sentiment. Whether or not they can kick other people's butt has nothing to do with it.

The raiding progression and PvP prowess that players in this game often mistake for guild patriotism has long clouded their better judgment. Many players admire their guild for being skilled or progressed, and not for being the guild to which they feel they truly belong. For them, their guild has to be the most impressive on the server in order to be worthy of their devotion. This is contrary to the truth behind real human relationships. For example, a man does not love his mother because she is the best mother, but because she is his mother. She belongs to him and is a part of him whether she is an angel or a raging alcoholic.

The same is true of guilds, as it is with nations. G.K. Chesterson once observed that Rudyard Kipling, the great poet of British imperialism, suffered from a "lack of patriotism." He explained, "He admires England, but he does not love her; for we admire things with reasons, but love them without reasons. He admires England because she is strong, not because she is English."

Patriotism, in a nutshell, is a love of one's own; a fact that could be proven in the typical letter a soldier might write home. Soldiers never write letters to applaud the military strategies of their leaders, or even the continuing success of their own country, but to tell their families they love them. Whether the war they are fighting is just or unjust has little to do with the reason they fight, as any soldier's mother or father, wife, husband, or child understands. The solider fights for them, without question.

And while no one questions that progression, gear, and recognition are all worth hearty pursuit as they are undeniably the end-all-be-all of tangible gain in-game, it seems that only a shrinking few of us would seek to answer the question that weighs on the hearts of our guild mates by telling them, in no uncertain terms, that they really are what makes this game worth playing. And that we love them. <3

While the message may be uplifting, the delivery is rather rude. Well, the first couple paragraphs at least. There's no reason to talk shit about other countries like that. It makes you sound like a xenophobic redneck. Smile

Normally I'd be offended if it weren't being said by an elitist windbag, but thanks for your time. =)

Hey, I'm not elitist!

Although generalizations, no doubt, I don't think anything about it is too rude or too far from the "generalized" perspective of most people.

ie.  The Complete Military History of France

Seriously, the French even dislike them more than Americans do...

Whether truth or mere opinion, I don't care. That's none of my business. It was still rude.

Considerably more rude things are said on Vent nightly.  "Balls to the face" comments come to mind.

Honestly to say France wimped out is a pretty cheap statement to make for wwII. They were the first allied country to get the full military force of germany plowing through there country, killing millions of military and even innocent people.

Germany signed a non-aggression pact with USSR and then splitting poland in half btween german and USSR. France stood little chance against the military force of germany. Germany at the time had no other threats to concentrate on besides france. At the time, they didn't have to split there military force to fight 2, 3 or even 4 battle fronts. It was one front.

So to say they wimped out is kind of an ignorante statement. American can not even fatham what that country went through during that time in history. Simple statements like these are also why other countries dislike americans.

Don't get me wrong, I love America. But I can see how some people might get a bad taste in there mouth over this post.

Everyone is entitled to their opnion. Just keep it clean.

Other than that, it was a good post.

I read it more like it doesn't matter what people think of your country....no matter what they say, its about pride in what you have, who you are, where you belong.  So there were some ignorant comments....that's the point...it doesn't matter.  It matters how you FEEL about it.

Sort of like the country song lyrics:

I don't give a dern what other people think
What do ya think about that?
Roiin

i fail to see how this post can be in any way rude... the post is truth in my eyes for me the whole and sole reason i am still even playing this game is bc i love spending my time with the good ppl i have met in this guild and my best friend brian (Cellwynar) and thats about it my gear and skill just come from enjoying the game with these ppl and tackling the content together with them bc with out em its the same as playing a single player hand held game that doesnt cost 16 a month

Rather than using reason or some sort of counter argument to discredit my assertions, you instead insisted that a contrived generalization of me discredits me. This IS elitism. The notion that right and wrong can be determined my mere fashion or taste is a long-established rhetorical tactic. It's much easier to suggest that ▀leu is a xenophobic redneck than to rebuff any statements I might make.

Hey! That was humor. Saying I'm not elitist means I'm still a windbag. Ha-ha?

Anyway, I used a smiley for a reason. I wasn't calling you a redneck. I never assumed you hated France, Mexico and whoever else. If I had, I wouldn't have mentioned it. If I don't have something nice to say, I generally don't say anything at all. I assumed that you were making a humorous point by exaggerating the bad features of other countries, only you didn't do a good job and it just sounded rude instead. Which was a shame as it took away from what was otherwise a good post.

I guess my exaggeration by saying you sounded like a redneck wasn't funny either.

I apologize if you felt I believed you were. I only thought you sounded like one. Smile
